Vacant Corner
There were once many corner stores throughout West Philadelphia. Some of these neighborhood stores still exist, but many have vanished, leaving numerous abandoned corner buildings and vacant corner lots, sometimes with more than one corner of an intersection vacant. Because of its visibility and its location at the entrance to two blocks, the character of the vacant corner lot exerts a great influence. When a corner lot is filled with rubble and debris it gives the adjacent blocks a feeling of decay; when a corner lot is used and maintained, however, it can give the neighborhood a sense of vitality.
