Swiss Cheese

Swiss cheese: a combination of missing teeth, vacant corners, connectors, and vacant blocks
Vacant lots reclaimed for different uses: private gardens, community gardens, meeting places, playlots, parking, and orchard

The Swiss cheese pattern consists of vacant lots of different types and sizes and occurs when there are nearly as many vacant lots as there are buildings. In West Philadelphia, this pattern of abandonment often occurs on the buried floodplain of Mill Creek, which was encased in a sewer in the 1800s.
